Who can benefit from Swedish Massage therapy?
If you are looking for short-term pain relief and temporary relaxation, you can benefit from a Swedish massage. Long-term effects in the treatment of pain and anxiety can be achieved with regular periodic sessions. Some research from 2016 also identified massage as a better alternative to using medication for long-term pain. Other 2016 studies have claimed that massage therapy is preferable for those who are resistant to drug treatment for chronic pain.
What you can expect from a traditional Swedish massage
When you choose to try a Swedish massage, you can expect the session to last 60-90 minutes, with your therapist giving you time to privately undress and lie on the massage table. You can choose to cover yourself with towels, which will help you feel safe and warm during this time. If you prefer not to be exposed at any point during the session, you can choose not to be exposed. Instead, your therapists should respect your wishes and reveal only the part they are working on.
For example, if they work on the upper back, only this part should be revealed.
The treatment should calm you down, helping you achieve complete relaxation. As such, your therapist should consider any areas of your body that are currently sensitive or tender from pain or injury. Some therapists also like to play music during the session, or chat with their clients. You should always feel free to say whether you want no music or no talking. Every part of the session should be tailored to ensure you feel comfortable, including background noises and potential distractions, so that you are able to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
