and improving range of motion.

A BIT OF HISTORY

The history of Swedish massage is a bit confusing, as there are two people who are often credited with discovering it. The first is Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish fencing instructor and doctor. The second is Johann Georg Mezger, a Dutch doctor.

Ling developed a massage system in the 1830s that he called the "Swedish Movement Cure." He believed that massage could be used to improve circulation, flexibility and range of motion. Mezger also developed a massage system in the 1860s, which he called "medical gymnastics." He used massage to treat a variety of medical conditions, including muscle tension, headaches, and back pain.

It is now believed that Mezger was the true inventor of Swedish massage. However, Ling's name is still more associated with him. This is likely because Ling's massage system was more comprehensive and systematic than Mezger's.
